Trifarian Captain is one of the cheapest ways to draw a card in Riftbound Radiance, the fifth set of Riot Games’ League of Legends trading card game, released on 23 October 2026. For two energy you put a unit on the board and look at the top four cards of your Main Deck. Could it become a staple of competitive Riftbound decks? Here is our take.
What Trifarian Captain does

| Text | When you play me, look at the top 4 cards of your Main Deck. You may reveal from among them a unit or Gear with Energy cost no more than 3 and Power cost no more than 1, and draw it. Recycle the rest. |
On paper this is a draw effect. In practice it is a little more complicated than “draw a card”. Trifarian Captain lets you look at four cards and choose a unit or Gear that costs three energy or less and one power or less. You draw that card and recycle the rest.
The restriction matters. You cannot use it to find a spell that immediately impacts the board, or an expensive unit for the late game. How good the Captain is will depend on how many suitable targets your deck contains.
A strong early-game option
There are currently only three other units with a similar card-drawing effect, and all three come with a downside:
- Scuttle Crab has 0 Might;
- Clockwork Keeper requires you to pay power to draw a card;
- Patched Porobot needs three Gears in play.
That makes Trifarian Captain a particularly strong play on turn 1: you develop a unit and add another card to your hand at the same time, which can give you an early advantage.
Why Miracle Kennen will love this card
The biggest advantage of Trifarian Captain is that you get to see four cards. Besides finding something useful, it tells you what remains in your deck and helps you plan your next turns.
Right now, Miracle Kennen looks like the deck that benefits most. Trifarian Captain gives you a good chance of finding Nocturne, Horrifying, which can be played for just one power when you look at it from the top of your deck.
Another important target is Seal of Discord, a Gear that costs zero energy and can therefore be found with the Captain. Both cards give the Kennen deck additional ways to reach the key pieces of its strategy.
Will other Riftbound decks use it?
We are curious to see whether Trifarian Captain finds a home elsewhere. Its restrictions mean that not every deck has enough suitable targets to make the effect consistent.
Still, developing your board while finding another useful card is an attractive deal for two energy. As long as Miracle Kennen stays a top-tier deck, Trifarian Captain is likely to see plenty of play.
